Curriculum Changes
Acting under delegated authority, SCUS approved the curriculum changes as set forth in
S.88-52 to the Chemical Physics Program.

CALENDAR CHANGES
i)
The Chemical Physics Calendar entry should be prefaced with the
statement:
Computing skills such as those obtained in CMPT 102 are
expected of students entering second year Physics courses.
Rationale:
Computing skill equivalent to CMPT 102 is presently expected
of second year students by the Physics Department. Students
in the Chemistry Major and Chemistry Honors programs must take
CMPT 102 before graduating.
ii)
The Chemical Physics Calendar entry for Upper Division Required
- Courses for both the Major and Honors should be changed to read:
PHYS 325-3 Relativity and Electromagnetism
OR
PHYS 324-3 Electromagnetics
Rationale:
Students were required to take PHYS 325 when it was the
only 300 level course in electromagnetism offered.
While the emphasis given in PHYS 324 is different from
that in PHYS 325, either course provides sufficient
background for the Chemical Physics student.
Information: -
At the moment students in Physics Honors and
Mathematical Physics Honors are required to take
PHYS
325, students in Applied Physics Major are required
to take PHYS 324 and students in Physics Major may take
either.
iii)
The calendar entry for the Chemical Physics Major Program, Upper
Division Required Courses should be changed to read:
PHYS
465-3 ?
Solid State Physics
OR
PHYS 455-3 Laser Physics
Rationale:
The present requirement that the Major student must take
Solid State Physics was set before Laser Physics was
offered by the Physics Department. Permitting the
student to take either will maintain a core program
beneficial to the needs of the student, yet recognize
the diversity of Chemical Physics. The option will also
give the student some scheduling flexibility in their
Upper Division courses.
