Inasmuch as the closing date for the submission of materials to the
Senate Agenda Committee was July 16, 1970, it was not possible to complete
the report on the modification of the summer semester and, therefore, this
constitutes a brief progress report as of that date. The intent of the progress
report is primarily to advise you of the framework within which the proposal
is being analyzed.

A Proposal to Modify the Summer Semester
The progress report set forth below is based upon the motion placed before
Senate at its meeting of July 6, 1970 by S. T. Stratton, Acting Dean of
Education and the proposal of July 18, 1.970 submitted by Professor John F. Ellis
for consideration by the University's Academic Planning Committee.
Summary of the Proposal.
Commencing with the summer 1971 semester, to create within the existing
summer semester, two two-month periods of study within either of which a student
can complete Senate-cpproved courses for full credit providing that the hours
of instruction and other requirements of the courses so offered are equivalent
to those in effect in the normal four-month semester.
Stated Rationale for the Proposal
1.
To enable students who do not need or wish to undertake a full
semester of studies to complete courses in eight weeks.
2.
To enable students who are unable to attend the University for a
full summer semester (school and college teachers and other groups) to
undertake courses in eight weeks.
.
?
3. To enable departments to broaden course offerings without adding
faculty. ?
