    ii)
    Senate Committee on Continuing Studies
    a) Paper S.77-123 - Report on Extension Credit Courses, 1976-77
    S. Thomas asked for a preview of activities and planning related to
the Fraser Valley and J. Blaney stated that the University had submitted
to the Interior University Programs Board proposals for three or four
credit programs and there was a possibility of two upper division courses
being offered in Chilliwack commencing January next. The Dean of Arts
added that he and two chairmen have been involved in informal discussions
and an attempt was being made to locate suitable instructors and courses,
but he regarded the proposal as a test rather than a final commitment.
    K. Rieckhoff questioned the accuracy of the enrolment statistics,
    .
noting that everything outside of regular. and regular time is termed
Continuing Studies, and that some regular offerings had been shifted to
evening classes possibly reflecting an artificial increase. J. Blaney
agreed that in the past year the number of courses taught as part of load
had decreased and one might expect the number of courses shifted from day
to evening would have decreased. He undertook to investigate.
    iii)
    Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
    a) Paper S.77-124 - Department of Geography - New Course Proposal
    - GEOG 346-3
Moved by D. Birch, seconded by J. Munro,
"That the new course proposal for GEOG 346-3 -
    Geography of Contemporary Industrial Societies,
as set forth in S.77-124, be approved and recom-
mended to the Board of Governors for approval."
Dr. E. M. Gibson, representing the Department of Geography, was
invited to join the assembly to respond to questions.
It was noted that GEOG 342-3 is to be discontinued.
It was ascertained that the reference journal, Landscape, had been
initiated in the Department of Geography at Berkeley and had been taken

over largely by architects and psychologists. It involved a broad con-
tribution of experience with the Anglo Saxon societies and included
    German theories.
    E. Wells was of the opinion the course should carry no more than one
credit, and H. Weinberg suggested the relationship between credit and
contact hours should be rationalized to prevent inequities. E. Gibson
stated the credit allocation was consistent with work done in other courses
within the Faculty of Arts for a one hour lecture, two hour seminar and an
extensive reading list. P. Jewett noted that a University Review Committee
task force was expected to be submitting specific recommendations for Senate
to address in connection with faculty workload and instructional methods.
Question was called, and a vote taken.

    Paper S.77-126 - New Course Proposals - ITAL 100-3, ITAL 101-3
Moved by D. Birch, seconded by J. Munro,
"That the new course proposals for ITAL 100-3 -
Introductory Italian I, and ITAL 101-3 Intro-
ductory Italian II, as set forth in S.77-126,
be approved and recommended to the Board of
    Governors for approval."
It was noted that both courses had been offered previously on a one
time experimental basis. C. Bouton stated there was a strong interest in
the Italian community and by the Italian Consul, and that teaching material
had been provided to the University and books to the students. D. Birch
discounted a suggestion that the courses proposed could be considered to be
the establishment of a new program. It was pointed out that approval to
give the courses would apply from Fall 78-3.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
    MOTION CARRIED
    d)
    Paper S.77-127 - Change in Calendar Description: G.S. 304-5
Moved by D. Birch, seconded by T. Calvert,

Board of Governors, the change in calendar description
for G.S. 304-5 - Richard Wagner: The Ring of the
Nibelung, as set forth in Paper S.77-127."
    J. Munro commented on the use of paper stock for a minor change,
and K. Okuda observed that such matters could be considered adequately
acted upon at the SCUS level. D. Birch responded that such authority
had not been delegated by Senate to the Committee.
Question was called, and a vote taken.

    Paper
    S.77-128
    - Course Change
    - G.S. 300-5
    Moved by D.
    Birch, seconded by T.
    Calvert,

to Marxism and the Arts, as set forth in S.77-128, be
approved and recommended to the Board of Governors for
    approval."
    D. Birch stated that the title change had been encouraged to
eliminate specific political connotations, a course description had
been added, and the method of instruction had been altered from
    lecture/tutorial to a lecture discussion.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
    MOTION CARRIED
    f)
Paper S.77-129 - Proposed Changes in Requirements -
    Kinesiology
Moved by D. Birch, seconded by T. Calvert,
"That the proposed changes in requirements - Kineisology
    - as set forth in S.77-129, be approved and recommended

    MOTION CARRIED
    g)
    Paper S.77-130 - New Course Proposal - BISC 105-3 - Biology
    and the Human Species
Moved by D. Birch, seconded by. K. Rieckhoff,
"That the new course proposal for BISC 105-3 -
Biology for the Human Species, as set forth in
S.77-130, be approved and recommended to the
    Board of Governors for approval."
    R. Carlson stated that he was not aware of any consultation with
the Department of Archaeology relating to possible overlap and would
move that the course be referred back to SCUS for closer examination
as he considered there was significant overlap with ARC. 131. The
Chairman ruled the motion out of order on the ground that the procedures
had been followed and the Faculty of Arts curriculum committee had con-
firmed that it. saw no substantive overlap with the courses offered in
that Faculty. Lengthy discussion ensued on the degree of overlap which
    .
may exist in elective courses and be offset by the unique presentation
    of a particular department.

    - 8 -
    S.M. 7/11/77
Moved by J. Hutchinson, seconded by K. Rieckhoff,
"That the ruling of the chair be challenged."

Moved by R. Carlson, seconded by J. Hutchinson,
"That Paper S.77-130 be referred to the Senate
Committee on Undrgifaduate Studies for closer
    examination of overlap."
A number of Senators spoke against referral of a course which had
been developed over a period of two years in response to student demand
for an alternative to BISC 003 and cleared by the committees.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
    MOTION TO REFER CARRIED
    h) Paper S.77-131 - Mathematics Requirements
Moved by D. Birch, seconded by K. Rieckhoff,
"That the proposed changes to the Mathematics degree
requirements, as set forth in S.77-131, be approved
and recommended to the Board of Governors for approval."
    B. Palmer expressed objection to a Committee amending a paper
without recording in its minutes the exact nature of the amendments.
    D. Birch gave assurance that acquiescence of the members of SCUS and
the chairman of the Science curriculum committee had been obtained to
adjust the wording of the proposed calendar statement to clarify the
    intent.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
