    2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
    At the request of L. Hale, and as there was no objection from the
    assembly, the Chairman agreed to the following addition to the minutes
    of the previous meeting, to be inserted following the amendment
    recorded on page 7:
    "R. Starcevich spoke in support of the motion, stating that
    he had written the exam and had done very well in it, but
    still found his literary skills lacking."
    The minutes of the Open Session of Jund 2, 1980 were approved as
    extended. ?

    3. BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
    There was no business arising from the minutes.
    4.
    REPORT OF CHAIRMAN
    Details of the attendance of graduands at the 1980 Convocation
    ceremonies were provided. In 1979 the percentage of graduands who
    attended was 52.3%. In 1980 the percentage was 55.5%, an increase of
    3.2%. In terms of actual numbers, there was a 19% increase in 1980
    over 1979. The Chairman noted the increased participation by faculty
    members and expressed his hope that this would be a continuing trend for
    future ceremonies.
    Senators were reminded that the deadline for receipt of nominations
    of candidates for honorary degrees is August 1, 1980 and it is the
    intention of the Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees to consider the
    submissions and present its recommendations to Senate at its September
    ineeting
    D. Birch announced that the University has reached agreement with
    TSSU in connection with the terms of the first contract which extends
    for a period of two years from May 1, 1980 and which will be recommended
    to the membership for ratification, and to the Board for approval.

    REPORTS OF COMMITTEES
    i) Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
    a) Paper S.80-81 - Changes in Credit Hours
    Senate received for information a paper outlining the policy which
    has been established in connection with changes in credit hours which
    may adversely affect the date of graduation.

    Paper S.80-82 - Literacy
    A report was submitted covering deliberations of the Senate
    Committee on Undergraduate Studies relating to perceived difficulties
    in connection with literacy. It is expected that recommendations of
    the Committee will be included on the agenda of the September meeting
    of Senate.
    c)
    Paper S.80-83 - Special Topics Courses
    Senate accepted for information a paper outlining the special
    topics courses offered in the Faculty of Arts during the Spring and
    Summer semesters, 80-1 and 80-2.
    d)
    Paper S.80-84 - New Courses and Title Changes: Archaeology
    Moved by D. Birch, seconded by K. Rieckhoff,
    "That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
    Board of Governors, as set forth in S.80-84, the
    proposed new courses in Archaeology, specifically:
    ARC. 332-3 - Special Topics in Archaeology I
    ARC. 334-3 - Special Topics in Archaeology III."

    Under its delegated authority, SCUS approved changes in title for:

    SCUS also waived the time lag requirement in order to permit first
    offering of ARC. 332-3 and ARC. 334-3 in the Spring semester 81-1.

    Paper S.80-85 - School of Business Administration and
    Economics: New Course and Change of Credit Hours

    proposed program revisions in Kinesiology,
    specifically:

    Addition of KIN. 142-3 - Introduction to
    Kinesiology to core program requirements
    for Major
    ii)
    Deletion of BISC 203-3 - Developmental
    Biology from core program requirements
    for Major
    iii)
    Addition of KIN. 341-3 - Sports Medicine I
    KIN. 441-3 - Sports Medicine II
    as part of 30 hours of electives."
    Responding to a question posed by C. Jones, T. Calvert stated that
    in order to maintain reasonable flexibility the Department desired to
    add an additional lower level Kinesiology course to the prerequisite
    requirements for the Major and it seems logical to delete BISC 203 inas-
    much as growth and development are covered in a number of other courses.

    Hour Value of CN.S 400/401
    Senate was advised of the action of the Senate Committee on Under-
    graduate Studies, taken under delegated authority, in approving a change
    in the credit hour value of CN.S 400/401 from 5 to 3 semester hours,
    effective from September 80-3.
    o) Paper S.80-95 - Change in Requirements - French Canadian
    Studies Certificate Program

    in the list of courses recognized for inclusion in
    an area studies program."
    Speaking on behalf of the student Senators in attendance, J.

    Crawley stated that the student caucus intended to vote No on the
    motion to support their contention that Senate should not lose its
    privilege of final decision. K. Rieckhoff requested that it be
    noted in the minutes that Senate be provided with a list of courses.
    D. Birch suggested that concerns might be eliminated with addition
    to the motion of the words, "and that Senate be informed of the
    actions taken by SCUS under its delegated authority." As there was
    no objection to the amendment, the words were incorporated.

    entirely consistent in the development in the Fine Arts.

    T. Calvert explained that the course proposal in Motion 1 is
    intended as a requirement for the Major; Motion 2 is enhancement of
    the Major, and Motion 3 is the Major program proposal details, all
    of which have been carefully planned over the last five years. K.
    Rieckhoff agreed that the presentation is in keeping with the evolution
    in the Centre for the Arts, but he questioned the wisdomof graduate
