S.M. 14/4/80
I. Whitaker's request to speak to the paper was accepted 1y the
assembly and he was seated. As the representative of the executive of
the Faculty Association, I. Whitaker urged that appointment of a candi-
date for a senior position be confirmed by ratification vote of faculty.
K. Rieckhoff spoke against the suggestion, stating that the ratification
process- would not contribute to the selection process inasmuch as the
best qualified candidates are seldom well known to the majority of the
voting constituency and faculty input is provided through Its elected
representatives on the Search Committee. R. Brown expressed uneasiness
regarding a vote ratifying individuals at the senior level because of the
diff i
culty of attracting well qualified candidates.
A. Lachlan moved that an immediate vote be taken on the motion.
Question was called on the motion to call the question.
