Action undertaken by the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board
at its meeting of October 21, 1982 gives rise to the following motion:-
MOTION:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board of
Governors a revised statement, as set forth in S.82-132,
to describe the present position of
B.C.
Grade 12 applications
below the minimum 2.5 (C+) requirement, as follows:-
'Only in very exceptional cases will an applicant be considered
with an average below C+. Such cases will be considered on

supporting documentation and academic potential. Often the
single most important factor to improve an applicant's chances
of admission is to undertake a year of study at a Community
College and apply as a transfer student under the existing
transfer policies.'
The previous regulation is as shown on the attached.

REPORT ON REVIEW FOR 1982-3
The responsibility for reviewing B.C. Grade XII
applicants in the 2.0-2.49 GPA range was referred
to the Director of Admissions by the Board.
This semester's review (for entry to 82;..3)-was
conducted from July 22 through to September 7. In
total, 171 applications were reviewed with 21 being
granted admission. Of the 150 applicants denied
admission, eight filed an appeal to the Senate
Appeals Board with six receiving a favourable decision.
The twenty of the applicants granted admission by
the Director were selected on the basis of having an

SFU admission average of 2.38 and an overall average
on all Grade XI and XII academic-subjects of 2.5, or
higher. The one remaining applicant was selected on
an SFU admission average of 2.25, an overall average
of 2.5, and B grades on two first year level College
courses.
The following is an overview of the applicants by
SFU admission GPA and details of the eight appeal
cases.

The current Calendar statement reads:--
PROCEDURES TO BE USED BY THE SENATE UNDERGRADUATE
ADMISSIONS BOARD FOR CONSIDERATION OF APPLICANTS IN
THE C TO C+ (2.0 TO 2.49)RANGE:
Range 1:

2.25 to 2.29 (B.C. Secondary School Grade
Point Average).
In reviewing applicants in Range 1, the
Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board will
consider such factors as the applicant's
overall high school performance; the
applicant's trend
in
grades; extenuating
circumstances; supporting information from
the applicant's school; and the availability
of courses to fultill the specific admission
requirements.
Range 2:

2.0 to 2.24 (B.C. Secondary School Grade

Point Average).
Applicants will be reviewed as in Range 1;

however, it is anticipated that very few
students in this range will be granted
admission by the Board.
Supporting documentation and letters of reference for
consideration by the Board should be sent to the

more restrictive position. This statement would appear
following the Admission Statement for Applicants from
British Columbia.
