Dr. Cohn Jones

1
Dean of Science
SFU
Dear Cohn,
The Department of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of
Sciences Graduate Studies Committee have approved the
following recommendation. Please place this item on the agenda
for the next Faculty of Science meeting:
The credit loading for MASC 501-3 be changed to 6 credits, to
MASC 501-6.
Rationale:
Two
Special Topic MASC courses are offered at
Bamfield Marine Station, usually during the summer, for
• ?
graduate students from any of the Universities that
participate in the Bamfield program. The SFU course numbers
for these courses are
MASC
501-3 and MASC 502-3. These are
full-time, intensive courses, with MASC 502 offered for 3
weeks, and MASC 501 for 6 weeks. The Bamfield Marine Station
calculates its course credits as one credit per full-time week
of study, which seems consistent with our SFU course credits.
However, our graduate students who have taken 501, the 6-week
course, can only receive 3 credits as the course loading now
stands. Consequently, we recommend that MASC 501-3 be changed
to MASC 501-6 so that students will receive the proper amount
of credits for the work they put in to this course.
Sincerely,
j u (J^
