RE: ?
REVISIONS TO MA. PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY
T
he Department of Sociology and Anthropology is proposing the following
changes in its MA calendar description in order to offer more flexibility in the
MA program, and to make our graduate program more responsive to current
needs in our fields. Currently the MA requires completion of four courses and a
thesis. We would like to add one additional option, and to revise the course
requirements for the thesis option.
The new option proposed consists of-
* completion of four one-semester courses
20 credits) +two extended essays or one
research project report.
The revision to the thesis option consists of-
* completion of three one-semester courses
(15 credits) + thesis
We would also like to offer our MA program on both a part-time and a full-time
basis. No extra costs, or new courses, or new library resources are associated
with any of these revisions. The Department is proposing these changes for the
following reasons.
(1)
Many students have expressed an interest in part time graduate studies in
our particular fields of study. We believe providing a part time option has the
potential to attract a broad range of students.
(2)
Many students have expressed an interest in completing an MA program
within one calendar year. Such programs are offered in many other
universities in Canada and the U.S.A. We believe creating this option will
make our program
more competitive
and allow us to attract high caliber
students.
(3)
The Department believes that increased flexibility and options will benefit
the overall quality of the program.
(4)
The extended essays or research project report options offer opportunities
for students to engage in both
innovative theoretical work,
and to gain
practical
applied research experience.
Therefore we believe these changes will meet the
. ?
needs of MA students wishing to continue in an academic career immediately
upon completion of an MA, as well as those who wish to apply their skills
/

outside of academia as a full-time career choice, or for a period of time before
continuing on with Ph.D. studies.

RATIONALE FOR NEW PROGRAM PROPOSAL
DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN'S STUDIES
MA. COURSE OPTION RATIONALE
Since its inception, the Women's Studies MA degree has included a thesis or two extended-
essays for degree completion. However, only two students have availed themselves of the extended
essays option. In addition, we will not accept a student into the thesis option unless a faculty member is
available and willing to supervse the student. Consequently, there are a number of excellent students
who cannot be admitted to the program. There are also many potential students who for professional
reasons wish to pursue a MA but who do not wish to undertake subsequent Ph.D. work, for whom a
course option MA would be an attractive possibility.
Thus, it seems that a course intensive program would allow the program to be made available to
some of the students who now cannot gain admission to the program. In addition, the Department now
has the ability to increase the number of course offerings to accommodate the course option, and we
think that an increase in the number of courses and the size of the class involvement would be an
advantage to the individual student regardless of the option for completion. Finally, the course option
is now an established program within this institution and others, and is regarded as a suitable way to
complete an MA.
