These three courses have never been taught, and there are no plans to teach them in the near
future. In one case, the faculty member who originally proposed the course has left the
department.
ENSC 836-3 Error-Correcting Codes
ENSC 881-3 Engineering Modelling of Dynamic Processes
ENSC
855-3
Passive Microwave Circuits
should be removed from the calendar.

THE FOLLOWING CHANGES SHOULD BE MADE TO THE CALENDAR
ENTRY ON PAGE 271
Rationale
?
?
Working in industry can broaden andmotivate the student's graduate education. By
incorporating a formal description of this option into our calendar entry, we are better able to
attract good graduate students. The presence of this formal description in the calendar also
makes it easier for visa students wishing to pursue this option to obtain a work permit.
OLD ENTRY
Thesis Work in Industry
In addition to the degree requirements for the M.A.Sc. Program the following conditions
will apply if a student wishes to undertake thesis work in industry.
PROPOSAL
The proposal must be approved by the Supervisory Committee and by the Graduate
Committee. The proposal must include the following:
- justification for undertaking the work in industry
- agreement regarding intellectual property and publications
- funding arrangement
ON-CAMPUS PRESENCE
During the thesis work in industry the student must spend at least one day per week (or
equivalent as approved by the Graduate Committee) on campus to meet with his/her supervisor
and attend regular seminars. This is in addition to time spent on campus for course work.
.
/

ORAL PRESENTATIONS
A minimum of two oral presentations for the Supervisory Committee (not including the
thesis defence) on the progress of the student's work will be given during the duration of the
thesis.
NEW ENTRY
Graduate Research Internship
With the approval of their Supervisory Committee, students accepted into the M.A.Sc. or
Ph.D. programs have the option of doing research internship in industry. The responsiblity for
finding a suitable internship rests with the student, though the Senior Supervisor will provide
whatever guidance may be possible.
In addition to satisfying the degree requirements for their program, students wishing to
take this option must satisfy the following conditions:
PROPOSAL
The proposal must be approved by the Supervisory Committee and by the Graduate
Committee. The proposal must include the following:
- justification for undertaking the work in industry
- agreement regarding intellectual property and publications
- funding arrangement
On-camp
us presence
During the internship the student must spend at least I day/week (or equivalent as
determined by the Graduate Committee) on campus to meet with his/her supervisor and attend
regular seminars. This is in addition to time spent on campus for course work.
Oral Presentations
A minimum of two oral presentations for the Supervisory Committee (not including the
thesis defence) on the progress of the student's work will be given during the internship.
Duration
The duration of the internship will not exceed two semesters, in the case of a M.A.Sc.
student, or four semesters, in the
case
of a Ph.D. student.
Explanation of changes
The research internship in industry was expanded from thesis only to the possibility of
spending some research time in industry at any time during the graduate studies. At the same
time, the total time spent in industry was limited to two semesters in industry for M.A.Sc. and
four semesters for Ph.D.
