The Political Science Department would like to add to the Calendar
description of its Lower Division Course Requirements (p.76) the
following sentence:
"It is strongly recommended that Pol 213-3 is included in
this
selection."
At present, the Department makes no methodological requirements of
its Majors, and
in
fact offers little in the way of methodologically-
oriented courses. This weakness
was
noted in last year's External
Review, and is acknowledged by the department.
Pol 213-3 was recently
re-structured, but the department feels that positive encouragement
(although not compuls
ion)
for Majors to take the course is desirable.

RATIONALE: The Department feels that some encouragement is
needed in order to enhance the general level of
methodological training Majors receive, which is
at present very low. The Department is reluctant
to introduce a compulsory course into a programme
where no such courses exist, and feels that a
positive indication of the desirability of such
training in the Calendar will stimulate the
intended improvements.
