Spring Semester
An examination of university calendars conducted by the
Registrar's Office
.
'indiates that practice in Canadian universities
varies concerning a mid-term break during the period covered by our
Spring Semester. At the University of Victoria lectures were cancelled
this year on Friday and Saturday, February 11 and 12. Most Faculties
at U. B. C. dismissed lectures and laboratories from Thursday,
February 17, until the, end of the week, although the university library
and other facilities remained open. At the University of Alberta
lectures and laboratories were withdrawn on Saturday, February 19,
to permit students to participate in Varsity Guest Weekend, while at
Manitoba, classes were cancelled on February 18 and 19 (Friday and
Saturday) except for the Faculties of Law, Medicine, Dentistry and
Medical Rehabilitation. McGill's mid-term holiday was Saturday,
February 19. The following universities, from among those examined,
did not schedule a mid-term break: Saskatchewan, Toronto, Queen's,
Waterloo and Western Ontario.
It should be noted that a mid-term break does not necessarily
mean that the university closes. As at U. B.C. lectures and laboratories
can be cancelled, but otherwise the university
,
can continue normal
operations. If, during a mid-term break, the library and other facilities
remain open, students will be able to use the period for uninterrupted
work on term essays and research projects.
During the Summer and Fall Semesters, a break from formal
classroom and laboratory work is provided by legal holidays.
