Report to Senate from the?
Committee to Review University Admissions
2003 Calendar Year
The Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA) reviews appeals from both
graduate and undergraduate applicants who feel aggrieved by the decision of the
University to apply a particular admission, readmission or transfer credit policy in his or
her specific case when special circumstances are present. An individual who wishes to
appeal must submit the appeal in writing, specifying the special circumstances to be
considered. All appellants have the option of appearing for an in-person hearing at a
CRUA meeting or of having a representative appear on their behalf. In 2003 seven
meetings were held: two for Spring, one for Summer, and four for Fall.
In the 2003 calendar year a total of 38 appeals were heard, 10 were sustained, 27 were
denied and 1 was referred back to the academic department and the Dean of Graduate
Studies. This is an increase of 8 (26%) appeals from 2002 and a decrease of 19 (33%)
from 2001. In 2002 there was a decrease in the number of new admissions to
undergraduate studies and a corresponding decrease in the number of appeals heard by
CRUA. Students required higher grade point averages to enter and received final denial
notices earlier allowing them more time to make other arrangements. Admission
S
averages were also high in 2003.
The table below reports the number of appeals received and the outcomes for Spring
2000 to Fall 2003. The second table, attached, reports the current academic standings of
those appellants admitted by CRUA. In certain circumstances CRUA may deny a student
but give conditions under which a student may be admitted to a future semester. The
attached tables reflect decisions made at the hearings and do not include subsequent
admissions of students based on criteria set by CRUA.
