MOTION: ?
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to
the Board of Governors that the graduate student
membership on the Dean of Graduate Studies Search
Committee be increased from two to five."
.
Note:
?
The Board of Governors, with the approval of Senate, has
power to establish procedures for the recommendation and
selection of candidates for deans,
?
Section 28 e.
Interim procedures were approved by Senate and by the
Board on July 7 and July 15, 1975, respectively, with
provision for two students selected by the Student Society
- following general procedures established for dean's
search in 1970. The proposal is to raise the number from
two to five without other changes by Senate and Board, and
would require Board action. There is suggestion of change
by the Student Society in the method used to select the
students.

The two student representatives on this committee have quit in
protest against their apparent lack of ability to influence either
the deliberations or the decision of the committee, in view of
the overwhelming power of the deans and faculty on the committee.
Bill Thomson, the 1st vice-president of the Student Society has
written to DGSSC asking them to accept five students elected by
the grad students. This is the number of faculty appointed, and
the representation the students themselves wish. It might give
the representatives a better chance to portray the broad interests
S
?
of grad students in four faculties and many varied disciplines.
As a student representative, aware that only Senate can alter the
membership of the committee, I hasten to bring this matter to
Senate and to ask for its speedy approval.
,
I might point out that at the time this was approved by Senate
I stood and asked for its reconsideration; thd chair ruled me
out of order, although the question was put immediately after a
vote on an amendment and without any discussion of the main motion.
At the time I was concerned about the small proportion of student
participatbn on this committee, and obviously my concern was well
founded.
If this motion is defeated, Senate is in effect guaranteeing that
there will be no students on the committee, and is confirming to
students across campus that they were given two places on DGSSC
simply to satisfy the proprieties and not to be a significant part
of the decision making process. I ask Senate to treat grad stu-
dents with the full measure of respect they deserve and to grant
9 ?
this increase in representation.

by myself for P1

f you are genuinely concerned about student participation on this
