TO: MEMBERS OF SENATE
SUBJECT: NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY -
TRANSFER CREDIT
FROM: ALAN C. McMILLAN,
DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS
DATE: 21 April 1975
INTRODUCTION
A letter has been received from
British Columbia (see attached)
Fraser to establish a policy to
University.
the Universities Council of
requesting the Senate of Simon
deal with students of Notre Dame
.
0
The Universities Council of British. Columbia has announced that
Notre Dame University of Nelson will be phased out as of June 1976.
The community, and the staff and students at Notre Dame have been
assured, however, that the University will be fully operational
for the 1975-76 academic year.
?
As a result the students of N.D.U.
will be able to continue their programs until June 1976.
The Universities Council has met with representatives (Registrars)
of the three Universities and expressed concern for the fate of
the N.D.U. students subsequent to June 1976.
?
In this regard, the
Universities Council has asked the three coastal Universities to
continue with their present policy of allowing transfer credit
for a maximum of 60 hours of work.
?
By continuing this policy,?
N.D.U. students completing their first or second year by June 1976
will be able to transfer without difficulty.
?
The Council has
already been assured by all three institutions that the present
policy will remain in effect.
Those students completing their fourth year at N.D.U. by June 1976
will receive a degree from N.D.U.
?
Of concern, however, are the
students who will have completed third year (90 credit hours) by
June 1976. ?
The Universities Council has asked the three
Universities to consider waiving their normal residence requirement
in
order that the third-year students from N.D.U. may be given the
opportunity to complete their degrees without interruption.
?
In ?
view of the fact that this situation is unique and will never occur
again, and the number of students involved is minimal (as of
December 1974 there were 88 students registered in second year at
N.D.U.), it is recommended that the Senate of S.F.U. approve the
following policy to deal with this situation.

"That, if Senate approves the principle proposed in Motion 1,
the following conditions apply:
(a)
in accordance with present policy, credit will be granted
only in those disciplines that are applicable to an S.F.U.
degree program.

currently recognized programs only.
(b)
that N.D.U. students transferring to S.F.U. will be required
to meet the degree requirements of the appropriate S.F.U. Faculty
and Department, at the time the transfer occurs.
CONCLUSIONS
It is hoped that a decision on this principle is not delayed, as
5 ?
it is desirable that the students of N.D.U. be advised of any arrange-
ments before they depart for the Summer.
?
In view of these
circumstances, the request has not been reviewed by the Senate
Undergraduate Admissions Board.
?
Should this principle receive
approval, the Director of Admissions will be prepared to meet with
the students of N.D.U. (either in late Spring or early Fall) in order
to assist in arranging their programs in the most appropriate manner
for transfer to S.F.U.
?
U.B.C. and the University of Victoria are
prepared to provide a similar service.

Dr. Pauline Jewett, President
Simon Fraser University
Burnaby 2, B.C.
Dear Dr. Jewett:
The Universities Council has expressed concern
over possible interruption
s
in
the academic careers of
students attending Notre Dame University of Nelson when
the.iflStitUtiOIl ceases to exist in its present form in
June 1976.
Those students in their fourth (and final) year
in 1975/76 will presumably graduate at the end of the
. ?
academic year, and the demise of the
institution
will not
affect them.
Those students in their first and second years
in 1975/76 should be able to transfer without difficulty
to other
institutions
with credit for their equivalent
courses.
The Council is most concerned with the fate of
those students who will have completed their third year
in 1975/76 academic year, and who would normally not be
accepted for the final year alone at two of the coast
universities. At the December 1, 1974 head count there
was a total of 86 students in second year, some of whom
would presumably enter third year in the 1975/76 academic
year.
After a meeting at which we sought and received
the advice of your Director of Admissions and similar
representatives from the other public universities, the
Universities Council unanimously passed the following motion.
THAT THE UNIVERSITIES COUNCIL OF B.C. STRONGLY
RECOMMEND THAT THE SENATES OF THE UNIVERSITY
OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
AND SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY PERMIT
THE
TRANSFER
.
?
?
WITH FULL CREDIT OF THESE NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY
?
OF NELSON STUDENTS WITH ONE OR MORE YEAR'S WORK
REMAINING TO COMPLETE THEIR DEGREES, INTO DEGREE
PROGRAMMES AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA,
UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
AND
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY.

I would ask that you give this matter your close
attention, and that you urge the Senate of the University
to give this case its full support, particularly in view
of the fact that this will occur one time, and the number
of students involved will be miniscule compared with total
enrolment at your institution.
Yours truly,
U ,
